THE ARGUMENT AND OUR MISSION

Participation in extreme and gravity sports are continuing to grow across the globe yet the people in India who are participating in such sports are being questioned, often face a lack of access to infrastructure facilities, opportunities, general support from people around them which force them to be in a constant fight and even leaves them compromising their love for the sports most of the times. The combination of stigmatization, social discrimination, inadequate physical education has major consequences on an individual life. We believe life is not that difficult and we as an individual have the right to choose and play without any comparisons.

What Culture mission is to create and cultivate local and global partnerships to end the stigmatization around extreme/gravity sports and empower people by giving them a voice to fight for their identity by keeping women at the forefront and cultivating sports as a tool for development and peace.

As per the study merely 5.56 per cent of the Indian Population is 'Sports Literate'. To put in numbers, merely about 57 lakh (approx) people out of 1.3 billion people are engaged in sports, directly and indirectly, and it reduces dramatically from childhood to adulthood. And when we think about practising extreme/gravity sports, one can imagine.

HOW WE STARTED

What Culture story starts back in the second half of 2017. This is when Project Wild Women was the whole and sole purpose of all efforts, a documentary featuring 14 women athletes across 11 extreme sports in India. While working on the documentary, Kopal through a common passion of climbing was very much aware that the idea she is working on, is not limited to film but it's beyond, and over time, after having the proof of concept, What Culture got launched with the idea to create a platform to put forward and advance the involvement of people in extreme sports and related ecosystems by keeping women at the forefront, give them an identity, bridging the information gap between, the relation with performance, and the connection with other cultures and the natural world.

Kopal says, "Believe it or not, patriarchy is the prime obstacle to women’s advancement and development. In the modern world where women go ahead by their merit, the socio-culture, access, resources barriers, gender roles, community expectation and responsibilities create obstacles for women to go forward in society and are responsible for the inferior or secondary status of women. In the 21st century, with feminism and women empowerment waves all-around, the majority of women still believe that they can't be free from patriarchal ideology and dreams are just for dreaming".
